ARCHIVAL HERITAGE PHOTOGRAPHIC REPORTS
Heritage Archival Recording for Development and Compliance
Many councils across Sydney require Archival Heritage Photographic Reports as part of the development approval process, particularly for properties that are heritage-listed or located within a Heritage Conservation Area (HCA).
At McCullum Ashby Architects, we prepare compliant archival recording reports that meet council and State Heritage guidelines, ensuring your project can proceed without unnecessary delays.
When is an Archival Report Required?
An archival photographic record is typically required when:
▪ A heritage-listed building is being altered or demolished.
▪ A property is located within a Heritage Conservation Area (HCA).
▪ Council conditions require pre-demolition or pre-construction recording.
▪ A Development Application (DA) includes heritage impacts.
We regularly prepare reports for councils including Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Willoughby, North Sydney, Inner West, City of Sydney and Central Coast, all of which have specific heritage documentation requirements in accordance with the NSW Guidelines for Preparing Archival Recordings of Heritage Items as a Condition of Consent which has now replaced the How to prepare archival records of heritage items (1998) and Photographic recording using film or digital capture (2006).
What Does the Report Include?
▪ High-resolution photographic documentation of the building and site.
▪ Recording of key architectural features, materials and details.
▪ Cataloguing of all images taken including where they were taken on site.
▪ Streetscape and contextual images.
▪ Written descriptions to support the photographic record.
▪ Formatting suitable for Council submission and long-term archiving.
